Joey Barton to speak on social media at the PPF national conference 2011
The Professional Players Federation is delighted to announce that QPR captain and avid Twitter user Joey Barton has agreed to take part in its conference in London on Monday 17th October 2011.
Joey, who has played in more than 200 Premiership games in 10 years, will join a high profile panel discussing social media. The other panellists are Matthew Syed (the Times), Angus Porter (CEO of the PCA), Matthew Himsworth (Schillings) and Hugh Tomlinson QC (Matrix Chambers) who will all discuss the impact of social media on the modern day athlete and both the pros and cons of using this method of communicating directly with the public.
Joey began his football career with Manchester City in 2002 after working his way through their youth system. His appearances in the senior side gradually increased over the following five years and he made more than 150 appearances for the club. He earned his first cap for the England national team in February 2007 before joining Newcastle United for a fee of £5.8 million in July 2007. After four years with the Magpies he joined his current club Queens Park Rangers in August 2011.
Joey is an ardent user of Twitter, boasting nearly 600,000 followers and courting both controversy and praise for his use of the platform. Commenting on figures from Friedrich Nietzsche and George Orwell to Isambard Kingdom Brunel and Morrissey, Joey’s eclectic tweets have resulted in him being described by the BBC as "as a philosophical sportsman to rival Eric Cantona in his heyday.”
If you want to hear directly from Joey on his thoughts about social media and get the view from the players, then make sure you buy your ticket now to the PPF national conference.
The conference takes place on Monday 17th October 2011 at the RHS Conference Centre in Westminster. Tickets can be purchased online by visiting www.ppfevents.org.uk.

PPF Conference, 4th October 2010
The first national conference of the Professional Players Federation has been hailed a fantastic success.
‘Heart and Soul – sport in the UK today’, which gave a voice to the players associations and focused on the underlying issues affecting them, attracted over 180 delegates from the UK and across Europe from a range of players associations, sports administrators and commercial organisations.
Despite a weather-delayed Ryder Cup and an inconveniently timed London Underground strike, the event was opened to a full house of delegates by PFA Chief Executive Gordon Taylor who delivered an overview of the past, present and future of player associations.
The day focused on a number of major issues affecting players including sports betting integrity issues, the use of drugs in sport and governance, with key note presentations delivered by Rick Parry, Chairman of the Minister for Sport’s Expert Panel on Sports Betting, Andy Parkinson of UK Anti-Doping and Sir Trevor Brooking CBE amongst many other leading figures.
Engaging and lively conference sessions followed throughout the day with the assembled speakers sharing their views and providing the delegates in attendance with a unique insight into the life of professional athletes, the action they believe needs to be taken to solve current issues as well as the opportunity to put their questions to the panels.
The first session on betting saw the PPF announce details of the pilot education programmes they are running for players during 2010 and 2011 on sports betting integrity and gambling addiction, both made possible by funding from the Remote Gambling Association and its members.
During the debate on drugs in sport, members of the panel argued strongly for a distinction between recreational drugs and performance enhancing substances with a greater focus on rehabilitation and treatment for players with drug problems.
Sir Trevor Brooking CBE then gave an overview of the latest thinking and policies on player development in football and in the discussion that followed there was a call for greater involvement of player associations in the governance of their sport.
The event was rounded off by a Chief Executive’s panel comprising of the PFA’s Gordon Taylor, Richard Bevan from the LMA, Angus Porter of the PCA and the RPA’s Damian Hopley, who together discussed the key issues affecting professional sport before taking questions from the audience.
Speaking at the close of the event, Brendon Batson MBE, Chairman of the PPF said “Monday’s conference showed the value and expertise that the player associations can bring on some of the biggest issues facing professional sport. Sport needs to include the players in its decision making process if we are to maintain and develop the UK’s position as one of the greatest sporting nations of the world.”
The PPF would like to thank all the exhibitors, speakers, delegates and associate members that made the inaugural conference such a great success.
